Thanks for all the info guys. I'm starting to really like this. The game is kind of slowing down for me and I can see some organization. I'm starting to like the Ducks. But Quick is really good. The ducks look a little better even though they are losing right now. I still don't understand some of the penalties. What is "Slashing"? I would assume some illegal thing with your stick. But what? Slashing is when you use your stick as a weapon and hit other players with it. In playoffs penalties aren't called nearly as often so you will see a ton of slashing.. The ones that get called are totally blatant two handed baseball swings, but you are never supposed to hit another guy with your stick as it fucking hurts lol. Any other penalties you don't get?

So if a guy is in the penalty box and the other team scores, the penalty is over right?
And Icing is when you send the puck all the way down to the other end and it crosses both blue lines and the other team touches it first? So then they bring it back and have a face off?
I used to know this stuff, but like I said I payed no attention since I was about ten years old. Fifty years ago.

Yes unless it is a major penalty, which means the player will spend the entire length of the penalty in the box and the team remains short handed the entire time. Best not to get 4 minute majors lol. And you are absolutely correct on icing.

I used to know this stuff, but like I said I payed no attention since I was about ten years old. Fifty years ago. One other thing to add with icing: the team who ices the puck is not allowed to do a line change. Often when players are tired and in their own end for a while, they will dump the puck down to the other end to get a change. This makes it more difficult to do that. But it is not just crossing both blue lines, but rather any time a player clears the puck from his own side of half and it crosses the red line that extends out from the goal line. It used to be just an outright footrace to the puck, but that resulted in too many injuries, so now it will be called icing automatically if two players are close. If the goalie touches the puck at all, there is no icing call. A team killing a penalty is allowed to dump the puck without an icing call. Substitutions are interesting in hockey as well. Teams sub on the fly, but at stoppages in play the away team must always change first and then once they change, the home team gets to adjust their line up accordingly. This prevents teams from going back and forth trying to get the players that they want to match up against an opponent's line. So home ice advantage is more than just having the crowd on your side.

Yes unless it is a major penalty, which means the player will spend the entire length of the penalty in the box and the team remains short handed the entire time. Best not to get 4 minute majors lol. And you are absolutely correct on icing. Actually, a four minute penalty is a double minor. It serves as two consecutive 2 minute penalties. If the opposition scores in the first two minutes then, starting at the next face off, the penalized player only serves another 2 minutes. Double minors generally happen on a high sticking call that causes a player to bleed. No blood equals two minutes while blood equals a double minor. I've never liked that rule, since the severity of a high stick penalty is not only determined by whether or not the guy bleeds. Other double minors can be for flagrant fouls like boarding, if deemed serious enough. Then there are 5 minute majors, in which a team plays short for the entire 5 minutes, regardless of say goals scored. Fighting is a 5 minute major, though both teams are usually penalized equally, unless someone is given an additional two minutes for instigating. Other 5 minute majors are given for things that suggest an intent to injure. These are usually paired with a 10 minute or game misconduct, where the team does not have to play short handed once the penalty is served, but where the guilty player is forced to sit out the determined amount of time.

Watching the Kings vs Blackhawks game. Overtime. Wildest, fastest, mass kaos I have ever seen in a sport. Totally crazy.
