Haha Russian military training. good one. I've seen that before, they have some weird events in the winter Olympics Just off the phone with my brother, said he's seen it before too, like for many years. He too couldn't believe they do this. But I never saw it before, maybe don't televise it a lot, not real popular you'd think. Might not be popular here but I think biathlons are crazy popular in Norway

Might not be popular here but I think biathlons are crazy popular in NorwayHow does one come to know something like that? lol So are you saying that this particular event is known as THE biathlon? I mean it seems you can combine any two totally unrelated sports and say it's a biathlon. Skate 2 laps, bow and arrows on your back, a few shots at archery, skate 1 more. More biathlon televised between 3 & 5 today, will try to catch it. My brother also said they need to get of curling too. That's big in Canada, ain't it? IDK, don't watch that one, think I tried once....zzzzz.

It is big in Canada, but there are also good teams all over the northern world... Norway, Sweden, UK, Germany, China, Japan, Denmark... even the USA has decent teams. I am glad they added it to the olympics... It might not require the insane physical fitness of some of the other olympic sports, but to play at the level these teams play at, it requires an incredible level of precision and skill. The top curlers in the world would be similar to the top golfers in the world. It takes a ton of skill to be able to read the ice (since it is not always exactly the same), to have the touch needed to stop a rock within inches of the spot you want it to be, and the ability to help control it (by sweeping) down the ice. It probably still sounds really lame to many people, but I love all sports... some are incredible to watch because of the physical ability that is required and others are equally impressive to me because of the technical skill and strategy required. Some sports require both (like football) and that makes them all the more exciting, but if you appreciate games with strategy involved, curling can be pretty interesting to watch. PS. I grew up in a family where both of my parents curled and my dad curled pretty competitively for a while. I've spent a lot of time at curling rinks throughout my life. So if you are watching curling and don't understand why they are doing something, ask me and I can clarify. (So can jin... but I'm older, so I probably know more).

Soo curling is like golfing for the northern countries? Interesting Somewhat.. though we love our golf up here too. But curling is getting a lot bigger now too. It used to be that guys didn't have to be in good shape to curl, but now if you look at the guys curling, especially the front end, those guys are built like football players. If you see a game for team Canada these olympics, look at our lead and second (the two that do the most sweeping)... they are massive. Sweeping takes quite a lot of strength and stamina, if you want to to actually be effective.

My brother said that, I had no comment, but didn't argue. His was just an off the cuff remark as we were just laughing about the supposed 'biathlon' in the form of x-country skiing and rifle shooting, or what they may refer to as 'marksmanship'? haha Or what me and Craig may refer to as Russian military training. Yeah, I can appreciate that curling takes a lot of different skills and physical abilities. Guess it's like many other sports in that the more you watch and learn, the more interesting it is - you get the nuances of strategy etc. I'll try to give it another chance if they're still having it. Yeah, I was kinda under the impression that women's curling is bigger than men's, IDK why. Yeah, you probably know more than Jindred for a lot of reasons. First off, you're a Broncos fan, need I say more? lol So I'll be sure to hit you up here should any questions (other than WTF am I watching?) arise. Thanks!

I know a lot of people don't know much about curling so I was trying to be the informative know-it-all that answered a bunch of questions that no one ever asked.

You didn't come off that way one bit, sorry if I did. Was not dissing your parents or anything. I usually just put in bold the stuff I'm mostly responding to in a post. And was dead serious about hitting you up with questions. So stay tuned. haha Although it looks a little self-explanatory once you know the rules - which I don't. I only thought about curling when ace replied, knew he was Canadian, and they seem to like it. So wondered what he thought of it. He seemed to know too much about the Norwegian's love of biathlons. lol

Curling is self-explanatory in some ways, but some ways, but a lot of people don't understand the little rules that play a huge role on the strategy. The biggest one people don't know is the free guard zone. It's a rule that you cannot remove an opponent's stone that is in front of the rings (a guard) with any of the first 4 rocks thrown. This makes sure that when a team is winning, they don't just take out every rock the other team throws. I hear so many people who don't know curling ask why a winning team doesn't just clear out every rock. And I thought everyone knew the biathlon was a Norwegian thing... maybe that's just a Canadian thing to know stuff about winter sports lol. Fun fact, the biathlon originated in Norway and was originally a training exercise for the Norwegian military ( thanks wikipedia!) so you and your brother weren't all that far off with your jokes about the sport.
