With free agency 30 days away I thought it would be a good idea to make a list of players by position, that would most likely be targeted this offseason by the Pats.
QB
Tim Tebow: I think there is a very good chance he is brought in again. There is really no downside to bringing him back in for another preseason, and maybe he will make the roster this time.
Jimmy Clausen: I always thought he was a smart QB, who could be a solid game manager.
Brady Quinn: McDaniels traded for this guy when he was the HC in Denver. Like Clausen, Quinn could be a solid game manager.
Most likely scenario: Tim Tebow will be brought back in at a 1 or 2 year contract.
RB
Maurice Jones-Drew: At a low price, Jones-Drew could bring a veteran presences to the back field.
Toby Gerhart: A possible replacement for Blount if he walks.
Anthony Dixon: A possible replacement for Blount if he walks.
Spenser Larson: Was a FB/RB in Denver while McDaniels was the HC.
LaRod Stephens-Howling: Was a solid kick returner in Arizona. Honestly I have no idea what he did this year, but I think a kick returner will be brought in.
Most likely scenario: Blount will be brought back on a 1 or 2 year deal, at low cost.
WR
Kenny Britt: A solid receiver, with a lot of potential. Wouldnt be payed very much, and could quickly become one of our top receivers.
Jacoby Jones: A solid kick returner, and decent receiver. At the right cost, I think Jones would be the perfect fit.
Ted Ginn: A solid kick returner. Honestly I have always thought Ginn was a terrible receiver, still his speed is elite even at this point in his career.
Emmanuel Sanders: A solid receiver. Can play inside and outside. I view him as a little bit better than Deion Branch in his prime. Would be the perfect fit for our system.
Jeremy Maclin: A simular receiver to Sanders. A little bit more potential than Sanders though. Would be a good fit for our system.
Most likely scenario: Julian Edelman will be brought back at Amendola like money. Around 8-12 million guaranteed over a 4-6 year contract, with lots of incentives. I also think a veteran receiver will be brought in, with Sanders being the prime target and Britt being the fall back option.
TE
Dennis Pitta: At the right cost Pitta could be a solid TE playing alongside of Gronk.
Dustin Keller: Concerns about his week 1 status will probably prevent him from getting a decent size contract. I have always really liked Keller's play, and think he would be a good fit. Worth the risk IMO.
Jermichael Finley: Concerns about his health after coming off a severe neck/head injury. Worth the risk at a low cost.
Most likely scenario: Michael Hoomananawanui will be brought back. No free agent will be signed, other than an unknown guy.
Offensive line
Alex Mack: One of the top centers in the league. I think we would be willing to pay him the 4-6 million per year price range. Would be a big upgrade to our inside oline.
John Jerry: A decent guard for the Dolphins. Would be a role player in our scheme.
Ted Larson: The one who got away. Larsen was a 6th round pick 3 years ago by the Pats, and was cut last week of preseason with the plan to place him on the practice squad. He was a solid interior linemen with the Bucs, and could be brought back at the right price.
Most Likely scenario: Ryan Wendell is brought back at the 2-4 million per year range. I think if Mack comes at only a 2-3 million more, then he will be the target.
DE
Andre Carter will be brought back at a low rate. Dont expect any big target here. Jared Allen could be a sleeper, if he came at a reduced rate. Julius Peppers could be another target assuming he is cut.
DT
Terrence Cody: DT really isnt a need with Wilfork, Kelly, and Armstead back. At the right cost I a guy like Cody could be brought in.
Most likely scenario: Nothing will happen here.
LB
Dane Fletcher will be brought back on a short term low money deal. Spikes will be going elsewhere.
CB
Javier Arenas: A solid return man, and decent corner.
Charles Tillman: This is the type of guy who would be brought in at a reduced veteran rate. Could maybe move to safety.
Most likely scenario: Aqib Talib will be resigned. I am thinking 5 year 25-35 million dollar contract or 3 year 18-24 million dollar contract.
Safety:
Taylor Mays: A big physical safety, could be a solid sub LB.
TJ Ward: I am going to be interested to see what his market looks like this offseason. I do think an attempt will be made to get a guy like Ward. His cost could drive him out of our market though.
Ed Reed: Would play 3rd downs, probably not much more than that. I still think Reed can cover receivers, deffently cant make the hits though. Obviously a Bill Belichick favorite.
Donte Whitner: Would be the perfect safety next to Mccourty. Price could drive him out of our market though.
Most likely scenario: Ed Reed on a 1 year veteran minimum.
