Seriously... this hit is completely absurd. HE BROKE HIS JAW AND FRACTURED HIS VERTEBRAE!! Lostabroad just explained why the hit was SO ILLEGAL on so many levels. He deserves a fine. Can you please just try and look at this from a normal person's perspective and get your head out of the giant black and yellow ass that seems to provide residence to so many Steelers fans' heads every year? Just be reasonable for one second. I am not commenting right now about the NFL and their screw up, because I haven't looked into the rules or anything yet, I am just commenting on the absurd belief that this hit was even remotely OK. He does deserve a fine, but fining him more than a game day check is also illegal. Goodell sending him this fine and hoping he's stupid enough to not know he can appeal it is pretty low. I read through the 2011 discipline rules, including fine amounts and I don't see anything regarding fining more than a game day check. Can you point out where you read that? As for the fine rules, nfllabor.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/2011-league-discipline.pdf , page 4 talks about the definition of a defenseless player and 'launching' which is exactly what Garvin did based on the definition. And Page 16 talks about fine amounts. The fine for an illegal hit on a defenseless player is $20,000-40,000 for a first time offender. I don't see anything that denotes where player's salary should be taken into consideration. I don't see why they should. If I am speeding down the highway, the police don't consider whether I am rich or poor when giving me a ticket. There is a cost for the offense, not based on what I make.

Based on the wording, the fines are not to be given out based on that though. The league has a fine schedule that they follow. I understand this because I used to help run the discipline process when I worked at my local soccer association. I wasn't on the board that made decisions, I was the administrative contact for both the board and the players/coaches/officials in question. I was always cc'd in the discussion for the board though, so I understood the process and could explain the ruling to ones being suspended. They look at the issue and use the fine/suspension schedule to determine where the issue fits. Obviously special cases will always special considerations though, but I don't believe Garvin's case is special at all. It fits within the fine schedule precisely under the $20,000-40,000 fine range for a first time offender. So he received close to the minimum fine possible for his offense. The CBA agreement notes that players have the right to appeal based on their salary. You are treating this as if Goddell is trying to pull a fast one on the Steelers once again, but that is not the case. The discipline board made their decision based on their standard process and now Garvin has the right, based on his salary to appeal that decision. There is no sneaky business here.. that is just how the system works guys. Stop trying to blame Goddell for everything. He definitely makes mistakes, but you guys seem to think he is out to bring down the Steelers and that is just a pathetic attitude... why me? everyone is out to get me... Other players and other teams face discipline a lot as well... Look at Seattle with their PED issues, Goldson with all of his fines, Suh with his, Merriweather with his. It isn't just you guys...

But it just seemed like to me that there was not consistency at times which lead me to believe that they adjusted the amount.

You are just too flagrant of a Broncos fan! I think you'd need to learn to be more PC about showing favouritism! For example no happy Bronco thursdays anymore!

That the fine could be reduced to under $6000 further demonstrates why the NFL needs to have the suspension and Draft pick removal options. A team could dump an offender and sign a replacement with a clean record for the next game. It looks like Garvin will win his appeal and the Steelers will have their victory over Commissioner Goodell. It should be remembered that in 2 weeks the Draft positions will be finalised for non-playoff teams. At that point the Draft adjustment penalty for Tomlin's sideline infraction can be assessed. I hope this incident will have no bearing on that decision. "I hope so, steelersfan4life56, for your sake. The Commissioner is not as forgiving as I am".
