I don't know...pretty steep for a first-time offender. Then again, this is Roger Goodell and Garvin is a Steeler so yea...

I disagree. Short of launching Garvin does just about everything possible wrong. Huber is well away from his team-mates as is expected from a punter's initial position. Garvin goes wide to block the gunner and falls over at the numbers. When he gets up he's behind everyone and Huber is the only opponent in sight. Huber is on the hashes on the other side of the field. Garvin targets him and has 20+ yards in which to identify him, (when he must already know he's the punter). Garvin is on his own 46 yard line whilst Garvin is on the Steelers 49 yard line and looking 90 degrees away from him. Garvin's movement takes him away from his own endzone and towards the Bengals endzone. Whilst he does this he can't hit the head /neck of ANY opponent or hit them with his helmet as ALL opponents are defenseless, (blindside block - Golden Tate vs Sean Lee), until he stops moving towards the Bengals goal-line. Even if he fails to realise that every player is behind him he must know that the punter is defenseless at all times. Garvin takes none of this into consideration and goes straight at Huber with the crown of his helmet. This is as flagrant as i've seen in a few years. As such Commissioner Goodell was within his rights to bypass a 1st offender fine and go straight to a suspension. He would also have been within his right to penalise the Steelers a Draft pick. His response has been unduly lenient, presumably because the officials on the field missed it and a harsh penalty would make the league office look stupid. If the officials had thrown flags I believe the punishment would have been more severe. www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-network-total-access/0ap2000000300216/Official-Review-Kevin-Huber-hitwww.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d81ffc5c5/article/owners-unanimous-in-passing-changes-to-three-rules?module=HP_headlines

I agree that a suspension would have been perfectly reasonable for this instance, but I am really against the thought of penalizing a team a draft pick for any on field incident. I think individual on-field fouls should be punished on an individual basis (ie. in-game penalties, fines and/or suspensions). I don't see the need to punish an entire team for multiple seasons by taking away a draft pick. If the management commits some sort of act, then maybe the team deserves such penalties (ie. Spygate).

At work on a phone so not gonna get links or anything, but this fine is going to get reduced. Per the CBA the NFL can only fine a player a max of 1/4 of a game check. Garvin is an undrafted rookie and makes about $24000 a game. So his fine can only be a max of about $6000.
Also there are several gifs out there of very similar hits on punters throughout THIS YEAR tht were not fines.
Inconsistentcy in this stuff is a big issue. Someone get that clown goodell out of office.
Issuing an illegal fine... Wow NFL FO. Good job.

Lostabroad just explained why the hit was SO ILLEGAL on so many levels. He deserves a fine. Can you please just try and look at this from a normal person's perspective and get your head out of the giant black and yellow ass that seems to provide residence to so many Steelers fans' heads every year? Just be reasonable for one second. I am not commenting right now about the NFL and their screw up, because I haven't looked into the rules or anything yet, I am just commenting on the absurd belief that this hit was even remotely OK.

I'm not saying the hit was ok. No where in there did I I'm saying that fine is absurd. Because it clearly is. He was fined MORE THAN HE MADE for that game. The hit? The rules? I don't agree 100%. It's a fast game and it hard in certain situations. You can't say Garvin had malicious intent. That's BS. You don't know. An the punter was in a position that h maybe could have dove and tripped up Brown!! Put a different jersey on the punter or something! Because WRs wear low numbers like punters/kickers and play STs. It's hard to ask a guy in the heat of the moment to identify a 'defenseless player' and act accordingly. I am also noticing a pattern where media/fans are making hits worse/not as bad based in if the guy was injured and not on the actual hit. I feel bad for the guy but if he doesn't break hit jaw is thi a big deal as it is. I'm ok with a 1/4 paycheck fine because he broke the 'rule'. But year after year the NFL is putting defenders and ST guys in harder and harder positions and I'm not sure it's good for the game. And you and others may not like it, but at the end of the day Garvin did his duty in the play. He cleared a guy capable of making a play on Brown out of the way and we score on the play. Football is a violent game. Always will be.

Huber's body was facing Garvin. And the defenseless rule is a crock of shit, I fully understand not hitting a player's helmet with their own helmet. But having the player avoid all helmet contact to the body is BS, and that goes for punters, kickers, WRs, ect. Even if the player's helmet is not the main point of impact on the other player's body, there is still contact even if they use their shoulder pads. And taking away a draft pick for an illegal block on the field is the most asinine thing I've ever heard in my life. Goodell doesn't actually have that ability does he? Garvin's a first time offender at that.

He does deserve a fine, but fining him more than a game day check is also illegal. Goodell sending him this fine and hoping he's stupid enough to not know he can appeal it is pretty low.
