Overdue for this kind of thread.
FA has begun in the MLB, and we have already seen a lot of big names find new homes.
The big catch of FA was Robinson Cano. After hiring Jay Z to be his agent, they wanted to strike it big, asking for a 10yr deal worth 310mil, which would be the richest deal in MLB history. His former team, the Yankees, did not want to bite on that offer, and offered him 7yr, 175mil, still a very wealthy sum. However, out of left field, comes the small market Mariners, who wanted him pretty bad I guess. It has been reported that Robinson Cano has signed with the Seattle Mariners today on a 10yr, 240mil contract. He wanted to hit the gold mine, and he got it. Is it worth not going after more rings?
The big signing before the Cano was one that possibly sent him packing to Seattle in the first place. It all happened very fast, but former Red Sox CF Jacoby Ellsbury signed a 7yr, 148mil deal with the New York Yankees. The Bronx Bombers have been criticized for not getting the big names in recent FA pools, and now they got someone who will immediately help the team. A problem with people, however, is that he is getting All-Star money, when Ellsbury is not necessarily an All-Star. In addition, he is known for his speed, and already being 30 years of age, how long will his legs hold up? Who knows, but this offer in comparison to what the Yankees offered Cano was a slap in the face to Cano, some say.
At this point in time, here are some of the other big deals in the offseason:
Brian McCann, C === New York Yankees === 5yr, 85mil
AJ Pierzynski, C === Boston Red Sox === 1yr, 8.25mil
Curtis Granderson, CF === New York Mets === 4yr, 60mil
And here are some big names that have yet to find a home:
Carlos Beltran, RF
Shin-Soo Choo, RF
Matt Garza, SP
Masahiro Tanaka, SP
Ubaldo Jimenez, SP
Ervin Santana, SP
Nelson Cruz, RF
Bartolo Colon, SP
AJ Burnett, SP
Stephen Drew, SS
And here are some big names that are currently swirling around in trade rumors:
Max Scherzer, SP, Detroit Tigers
David Price, SP, Tampa Bay Rays
Matt Kemp, OF, Los Angeles Dodgers
Brandon Phillips, 2B, Cincinnati Reds
Jeff Samardzija, SP, Chicago Cubs
Chase Headley, 3B, San Diego Padres
Mark Trumbo, 1B/OF, Los Angeles Angels
It is gonna be a crazy offseason.
