I know he's still young, but if he can stay healthy and play a long career, I think he might go down as the best TE in the history of the game...he is just downright dominant when he's on the field.

Once you mess up your back it's a whole 'nother issue. Johnny Knox had fractured his vertebrae, which is normally a shorter time frame for healing, and that knocked him out of his career. Right now, all I can really say, is once they cut you open you're going to have stenosis of some magnitude. From there it puts extra pressure on the surrounding discs, but less than a full or natural fusion would.
Think of your spine like a whip, made out of metal sections connected to rubber grommets. Each time you have to take out some of the rubber, you get less stability out of that section, and less movement over all. Once enough of that "rubber" is eaten away, you get the metal on metal (bone on bone) grinding that causes your back to literally lock up, and doing more damage to those around it because it's now putting pressure on the healthy discs to absorb the pressure the injured one cannot. Once you start having to mess with the structure, you no longer have a fluid contact point, and that can through off everything, how you walk, you posture, where you pain is at, and what kind of things your able to do at all.
The first time, he missed the entire 2009 season in college. If I was a pats fan, I'd be counting my lucky stars we still have Hernandez and Tom Brady. My guess is October at the earliest, even though the reports are saying most of mini-camp up to week 1.

I think this spells the end of dominance for him. He is damn good, but hes always been injured.
