I made it a seperate thread because what she has to say, I listen to. She's amazing and this is her opinion. I had emailed her asking if vaccines can cause autism.
Daddy,
Just a warning, this issue makes me mad! I appreciate you asking me instead of just looking stuff up on the internet. Anyone can post whatever they want on the internet, whether it is true or not. Here are the medical facts, I can give you links to studies if you want them.
In 1998 a doctor in the UK published a paper linking vaccines to autism. This paper had fraudulent data and multiple conflicts of interest. Since then, MANY studies have been done that discredited his findings. Also, his license to practice medicine has been revoked because of the false claims he made. There is no evidence to support the claim that vaccines cause autism. Unfortunately, a lot of people still hold onto the idea that they do. I really don't understand why...I mean, ONE paper was published that suggested a link between autism and vaccines, and that paper has since been retracted and the author lost his job as a doctor for it. DOZENS of studies have been done and articles published showing NO LINK between autism and vaccines, yet people still believe that one paper from 1998!
I think a part of the problem is that a lot of uninformed famous people have been spreading false information. For example, Jenny McCarthy. Seriously, who takes their medical advice from a woman who gets paid to take her clothes off? I would prefer medical advice from doctors and scientists personally.
The reason why this issue makes me so mad is because people are refusing to vaccinate their children because they think their kids will get autism. There is a measles outbreak in Europe right now and at least one person has died from it because people are not getting vaccinated. There have been multiple whooping cough outbreaks across the US. Diseases that were pretty much eradicated from developed countries like this one are making a come back, all becomes some playboy bunny is holding onto this one piece of fraudulent information and she won't shut up about it on TV.
There is something called "group immunity" that pretty much says a certain percentage of the population must be vaccinated to prevent a resurgence of an illness. Group immunity protects people who cannot get vaccines for legitimate reasons (like they are allergic to the ingredients or have compromised immune systems). When less people get vaccinated for stupid reasons, these people who cannot get vaccinated for real reasons are put at risk against their will.
Overall this issue pisses me off a lot. Vaccines do not cause autism. Getting multiple vaccines at one time does not cause autism. Many cases of autism are genetic or related to the environment in the womb before they were born.
A lot of people say "But signs of autism showed up after my kid got the vaccines!" Well yeah, autism is not evident at birth, you start to see signs as kids get older. The fact that it is around the time that the kid gets vaccines is irrelevant. If a kid is going to develop autism, he is going to develop it whether he gets vaccinated or not.
