im still not happy with the saints letting go of spags but im anxious to see what ryan will do Why not? We were not just the worst defense this year, coming in dead last--but, in terms of yardage given up, we were the worst in NFL HISTORY. And you want to keep Spags. No way. I don't like Ryan at all, but if he can do something with our D, we might be in good shape.

Oh, and I have a question. The Saints requested to interview the 49ers DC, and were turned down. I always thought "asking" to interview was a formality. I didn't know they could actually refuse to allow it. That's kinda crappy of the 49ers,isn't it? Or is there another point of view I'm not seeing.

Stupid question. Well not stupid, but one I'm embarrassed not to know by now...How are coach's contracts structured? Can they be as different as those of the players? I mean you don't really hear about coaches being signed for X number of years. Seems it's more like 'at will employment'. I remember when Josh McDaniels was fired early December a couple years ago.
Not sure you hear about their salaries either. Maybe it's not subject to disclosure cuz it doesn't affect the salary cap?
I have no knowledge of Rob Ryan's DC skills. But can at least say that the Cowboy's defense was far from the worst, at both stopping the run and the secondary. At any rate, I think their defense (as well as offense) will be much improved simply due to getting Sean Payton back.

They don't count against the cap, so the owners can simply buy out their contracts and terminate them whenever they want. The owners are rich enough that eating a few mil doesn't hurt them, which is why coaches are constantly being fired before fulfilling their contracts. As for the structure, I'm not sure if they have incentives or what not, or escalators, or any of that. Can't find much online in regards to that information... I will say that I think Mike Holmgren made 8 mil a year for at least a season with the Seahawks once...making him the highest paid coach ever for a single season...off topic, but interesting.

Coaches cannot be denied a request to coach for a Head Coaching slot during the off season. During the season they only can with the teams permission. So it is a formality if the league is in the playoffs and both teams are out of it. Usually the team will denied the offer if one or both teams are still playing. To answer your question, teams can deny requests to interview coaching positions that are not the head coaching slot and often do.

Does anybody know or have any ideas on where Steve Spagnolo will land with Rob taking over his job in NOLA?
