I always thought the term came from Acts 13 in the new testament. It was a sir name given to simeon because of his dark complexion. Niger, not for the country but is meant dark in latin. I could be wrong tho

@dive just because a country is called Niger or Nigeria, doesn't mean the population that lives there call it by that name. Germany isn't Germany in german, Japan isn't Japan in japanese and I bet half of the countries we know are known by a different name elsewhere. Surely the name itself is different from the English version we know. Okay, I did have the feeling that the Latin came first. But forget German and Japanese for now. Let's say they all have other names for themselves. Do you really think the country names Niger and Nigeria would be acceptable in this country with the large black or 'African American' population if it was in the least bit a racist connotation? Certainly the 'nigger' sounding names would not escape anyone. I honestly have no clue as to what the natives of those native call themselves or their countries.

I always thought those countries were pronounced with a soft "g" sound so they never sounded like any offensive slur to me.

I'm 1/4 Native American. I found that out today while talking to my mom about this (she's a big football fan) and she informed me of me being Native American on my dads side. And I still don't think this is an issue. People just like to start shit about something stupid like this. The name hasn't changed in 40 years it won't change now.

Of course you don't, you didn't grow up with the same prejudice and insults that they did. And you wouldn't have came across the amount that most natives do over night. You have to remember it's not only what the name is, but what the name represented, and still represents to them. You can't say something like that, because it's pointless. If you weren't raised in a traditional way, or treated like a true native american all your life, then you wouldn't understand the same point of view.
