I think the 49ers might end up with a QB controversy coming into this last stretch. They just owned the Bears on MNF and a large part of that ownage was due to how well Kaepernick played. He was making plays all day and helping to win the game. Something Alex Smith hasn't tended to do in past year.
Now Smith has been better this year, but going into playoffs who would you rather? The veteran game manager who has been to the playoffs. Or the inexperienced play maker?

I didn't see the Bears game. I saw quite a lot of the 49ers in preseason amd Kaepernick outplayed Smith. I would have started Kaepernick week 1 but Harbaugh stuck with Smith presumably based on last year's form and loyalty. When Smith struggled in the redzone Harbaugh stuck with him and didn't change that decision until after the game was lost. Kaepernick is not a better passer than Smith but he poses more problems for a defense.

He was throwing with precision accuracy last night when I was watching.

Kaepernick failed to spot open receivers in preseason and against the Rams. He also missed with passes he ought to have made. That said he's a more dangerous QB. It wouldn't surprise me if the Chargers try to get one of the 49ers QBs once the season has finished.

Funny you say that LAB. In the voice of the fans here in San Diego, people were asking to get Kaepernick. I hope they start him because Vernon Davis is on my ff team and I like the way he throws it down the field. With Smith they just hand it to Gore.

craig, I didn't know that. I was referring to the fact that the 49ers pinched Tolzein from the Chargers last year and Whitehurst doesn't seem to have made any impact in San Diego. It would make sense if the Chargers tried to get him back or maybe added Smith to give Rivers some competition. I'd be very surprised if the Chargers didn't make some sort of change to the QB situation next year.

If the current trend of Charger play continues. There will be A LOT of changes next year. I doubt Rivers will be one of them, but you never know. We need OL bad. Can't run, can't pass protect.

I think Kaepernick played excellent, but we need to see him play more in the regular season for me to be completely sold on him. Not taking anything away from him though.

i thought kaepernick would be a solid starter before he was drafted. i believe if he starts for the rest of the season i would put the 49ers as the favorites in the nfc. with that said, i hope smith plays next week
