This front 7 is going to be really good this year, which should make up for the secondary(which isnt bad, just close to as good as last year).

Collins and Hightower both played at a probowl level last season. Now Mayo and Spikes return.

Brandon Spikes' one-year Patriots deal: $1.1 million, $800K salary, $200K playtime incentive, $25K roster bonus 1st game, $25K sign bonus.
Crazy how a guy with such dominate run stopping skills cant get much more than a veteran minimum deal. Spikes is probably the NFL's best run defending LB, although his pass defending skills are arguably dead last.

MarchingOnPats will hold joint practices with New Orleans this year. Makes the week before the game more interesting, but basically eliminates play from starters during the actual game.

Wes Welker basically pleaded to come back to New England today.
Although I wouldnt complete rule it out, not only was Welker clearly not the same player the last two seasons, but I also do not see any role for him. He couldnt take snaps away from Amendola, Edelman, or LaFell. We ran 3 WR sets less than 30 percent of the time last season, and 4 WR sets less than 2 percent of the time. So in the current system he would be looking at like 10-30 catches, if that.
Still no reason not to sign him at a veteran minimum deal. Worse case scenario you cut him and pay him virtually nothing, best case scenario he healthy and puts 40-50 catches. More realistically is you get a reliable backup option at the WR position.

Pats waive TE Tim Wright, QB Garrett Gilbert.
Looks like Scott Chandler is playing a big role so far during OTA's. The TE position is a lot deeper than it has been recently with Gronk, Chandler, Davis, and Hooman. While Wright occasionally flashed last season there wasnt going to be much room for him this year.
Having Gronk and Chandler on the field at the same time will create mismatches that will either benefit the run game or the passing game. Gronk is impossible to defend and Chandler is a tough size matchup. I expect to see a reemergence of the 2 TE packages.

Pats had some interest in Mathis via a predraft trade. Not sure the interest is still there after drafting two potential starting guards.
