2nd Round, 59th pick overall: Jack Mewhort OT/OG Ohio State
Grade: B-
Colts make this pick because they cannot have the face of the franchise absolutely battered again next year Played T in college, will slide inside purely based on need. May have higher ceiling at guard. Can play any position on the line. Very smart, competitive player. Very good in technique in pass protection and mirrors well. Opens good running lanes, which were rare to come by for Colts RBs last year. Will get overpowered by bull rush. Speed and agility a big concern. In terms of impact first year, he will battle with Hugh Thornton for the RG spot. I see him as a solid player throughout his career due to great toughness and intangibles. I doubt he has all-pro potential. I like him, but they could have gotten better value here. IMO he could have been available at their 3rd round pick.
3rd Round, 90th overall: Donte Moncrief WR Mississippi
Grade: A
The Colts had much bigger needs than WR, but make this pick based off of value at this point in the draft and long-term worries concerning the health of Reggie Wayne and Hakeem Nicks. Near the top of this WR class when it comes to athleticism. At 6' 2'' 220, a 4.4 40, and a 40" vertical, he is more than ready for the NFL physically. Must work on the finer points of the game. Very inconsistent route running and will drop some balls. Only average elusiveness in the open field, more of a straight line speed guy. Needs to be more physical Immediately comes in as a playmaking type guy and will see a role in the rotation very quickly. Very high ceiling, and with a great mentor in Reggie Wayne, if he taps into his potential, could be a very good player. He gets an A from me based on pure athleticism/size and because I saw him as a fringe 1st-early 2nd round guy. Love this pick
5th Round, 166th overall: Jonathan Newsome OLB Ball State
Grade: B-
The Colts make this pick with hopes of finding a good situational pass rusher as well as an understudy and possible future replacement for the aging Robert Mathis. As of now, Newsome is a pure pass rush guy from the 3-4 OLB with very good burst and closing speed. Can put his hand on the ground in hybrid sets as a 5. Good with stunts on blitzes. Is also a very hard hitter. One-dimensional player at this point. Strength is an issue, can get swallowed by some of the bigger O-linemen that get their hands on him. Will have trouble setting the edge against the run. Weak in coverage. Character concerns earlier in college career. Has the tools to be successful. Will see very few snaps his first year, but after several years of development I think he could be a good player. A slight reach for the Colts. This pick gets knocked a lot, but I like it a lot due to his long term potential.
6th Round, 203rd overall: Andrew Jackson ILB Western Kentucky
Grade: C+
Like this pick. ILB was down the list of needs. Jackson is a physical, downhill LB who can provide some thump in the D. Average lateral agility will hurt him, but he is a competitive guy who flies to the football. Lacks top end speed. He has a lot to learn when it comes to coverage and diagnosing plays, but has a high ceiling as a solid starting ILB in the Colts' 3-4 after a few years of development. Big character concerns though and will need a veteran guy like Freeman or Jackson to take him under his wing to make sure he stays out of trouble and keeps working. If he had played in a more competitive conference and didn't have character question marks, I would see him as a 4th round guy.
7th Round, 232nd overall: Ulrick John OT Georgia State
Grade: F+
Who? I understand why they're going O-line, but no one has ever heard of this guy. And I don't agree with going T either. They need interior line, specifically C at this point. It's hard to provide analysis on this guy, but from what I've read of him, he is a gigantic project. Needs to put weight on for a guy that's in the 6' 6-7" range. Decent athlete as well. If the Colts really wanted him, they could have gotten him in UDFA easily. This guy was on no one's radar. Why not go D-line or DB here?
What I liked: Potential of several guys in this class. Moncrief.
What I didn't like: Lack of instant impact across the board.
What totally baffled me: No DBs. None. Would not have hurt to add a D-linemen too. Both more pressing needs than WR.
Also, Urlick John. Who in hell is this. He didn't even have a profile on any of the draft sites.
OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: C
Disappointed in this draft.
