This is not an official news post, but according to my sources this move is likely to happen by the end of February. The Titans owe Chris Johnson 9 million dollars and they can save 6 million in cap by cutting him. This has been speculated for about 3 months now and it's just now become inevitable.
Developments:
1. Chris Johnson is injured. For the first time in his career, the artist formerly known as CJ2K is having offseason surgery after playing through a partially torn meniscus that he suffered in the second half of this season. Although never caught from behind, Johnson's acceleration and lateral moves looked visibly inferior to 2012 and 2011. In his six year career with the Titans, Johnson has never missed a start while taking 1742 carries and starting 97 straight games at RB, the current leader amoung NFL RBs.
2. "Cancer in the locker room". Recently TE and team leader Delanie Walker vocally complained about players he described as cancers who had given up after Locker went out for the season. Walker is a professional and didn't name names, but Chris Johnson immediately called him out and insist that he should speak up. This leads me and most Titans fans to believe that Chris Johnson was on his shortlist. If Chris Johnson gave up on the team it doesn't seem likely that the Titans new brass won't give up his paycheck.
3. Salary. Chris Johnson is currently paid more than: LaSean McCoy, Matt Forte, Arian Foster, Marshawn Lynch, Jamaal Charles, CJ Spiller and every single NFL runningback except Adrian Peterson. He's fallen short of all those RBs in production recently except when Foster got injured.
4. Tommy Smith as Sylvester Croom will influence decision. For those of you who don't know, Titans Runningback Coach Sylvester Croom is one of the most respected men in the NFL and College Football. CEO Tommy Smith has said that his opinion of keeping Johnson will help make the actual decision. That isn't good news for Johnson since Croom is famous for having a short temper with players who don't leave it all on the field, if you'll oblige the cliche.
I'm disappointed this if finally happening and I doubt the Titans will be as good if we cut him. That's why I made the decision to keep him in the Community Mock Draft. There was a time where Chris Johnson might have been the NFL's best offensive player, and he was the best Tennessee Titan for an even longer time. It's going to be tough to see him wear another team's colors next year. This is a tribute.
