The cap is now expected to be set at 132 million. The Patriots should have about 9.3 million in cap room as of now. Here is a list of the teams highest cap hits, and some possible ways they could be lowered:
Tom Brady, 14.8 million: Brady is one of the lowest paid veteran starting QB in the NFL as of now. QB is already the highest paid position, and this is an incredible value.
Vince Wilfork, 11.6 million: More than worth the money, however I think an extension is likely. We could free up 8 million by releasing him, which I do not believe is a possibility. I expect a Terrell Suggs type extension, and it should free up 4-6 million in cap room.
Logan Mankins, 10.5 million: A very high cap number for a guard. Mankins is still one of the top, if not the top guard in football. Last season he filled in multiple games at left tackle when Nate Solder got hurt. Mankins is one of the few players who can play every position on the offensive line. We could free up 2 million with a restructured deal.
Jerod Mayo, 7.2 million: A very good value, for what Mayo brings to the table. No chance of a release, restructure, or extension.
Rob Gronkowski, 5.4 million: Same situation as Mayo.
Devin Mccourty, 5.1 million: Mccourty has become one of the leagues top safeties. This is the last year of his contract, and I expect him to get an extension this offseason. An extension could free up about 2 million in cap room this season.
Danny Amendola, 4.5 million: A very good value, no chance of a restructure, release, or extension.
Dan Connolly, 4.1 million: I think there is a good chance Connolly is released. He is a solid linemen, the type of guy you can win with, but probably not worth 4.1 million at this point in his career. We would save 3 million by releasing him, and I think that is very likely.
Isaac Sopoaga, 3.5 million: I think this one is pretty simple. Kelly, Armstead, and Wilfork are our top 3 interior linemen. All 3 of them were on IR last season, which created the need for Sopoaga. We will save 2.5 million by cutting him.
