With the 30th pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, the New York Giants select Cyrus Kouandjio, OT, Alabama
As stated earlier when the Giants made their first selection of tight end Eric Ebron, owner of the team, John Mara, made it clear that the offense "was broken" and needed to be fixed. Dating back to the 2013 NFL season, the weak point of the Giants offense throughout the entire year was the offensive line play, which was mediocre at best. It was a priority to not only fix the offensive line and give Eli time to throw the ball, but to make the offensive line that of the five guys the Giants sent out for years on end - the best. Maurkice Pouncey is arguably a top five center in the league, and Jon Asamoah is arguably a top five offensive guard in the league. It must be noted that both players are extremely young as well, being 24 and 25, respectively. I was fortunate to get Chris Snee back on the cheap side, but it is not all roses. There are serious talks about the veteran guard retiring due to his nagging injuries the past two years. So a backup plan was needed. I was not sure what I would do, but seeing the free fall of one of the most talented players in the draft made the decision a lot easier for me to make. His name is Cyrus Kouandjio. There is so much to say about this guy. For one, he is only 20 years of age, just like Eric Ebron, so they both have a tremendous amount of room to grow in skill-set and possibly even frame. He had one bad game against Oklahoma, and suddenly people everywhere were forgetting what made him a top 10 consideration earlier in the year. The talent that Cyrus possesses is insane and he can play a multitude of positions. The Giants now have a ton of flexibility on the offensive line, as they now have Will Beatty, Bryant McKinnie, Justin Pugh, Cyrus Kouandjio, Chris Snee, Jon Asamoah, Brandon Mosley, Maurkice Pouncey, and David Baas. If Will Beatty struggles to come back from his injury suffered against Washington at the end of the 2013 season, then Cyrus can play left tackle (or Pugh left tackle and Cyrus at right tackle). If Chris Snee retires, Cyrus can play right tackle and Pugh can get rub at offensive guard. Overall, the biggest weakness on the Giants in 2013 has now become one of the strong suits entering the 2014 season.
