Starting this thread mostly because Plax was talking down Jamaal Charles. And I'd like him to restate his arguments here so I can disagree with them more directly.
But we all know I think Jamaal Charles is a top 3 RB. I'm biased. Who do you think is the best -overall- RB? Running/Blocking/Catching, Does it all?
I'll post my actual break down list shortly. But I'd say my top 3 would be AP, Shady, and Charles. Do Shady and Charles block? A lot better than people give them credit for. And everyone knows how they run and catch.

AP is the best RB in the league, in terms of a pure runner...but the best "all around" RB is Shady IMO because of his strength as a pass catcher.

everyone might laugh at me for this and call me biased, but to me it's Ahmad Bradshaw. a great runner, the best blocking RB in the NFL, and is a quite good receiver. if it doesn't involve injury issues, of course

Bradshaw IS a premier blocker. Decent at catching. Can truck someone (he is VERY underrated in that regard). Can shift and change directions. IF he was healthy, I would agree with him being a top 10/15 RB in the league. But he is just never healthy, and I am afraid for him to make a cut anymore. It is a shame, especially when he is still relatively young.

Charles is a monster at blocking. Thank the lord, someone who watches the Chiefs. (Other than me and Mork ) Try telling that to Plax. He says Charles can't truck guys, or block. All he does is run to the outside and use his speed apparently.

Anyway... I think AP has got to be the best. Although, Shady and Charles are catching IMO as AP ages.

You're right plax - it was kinda of douchy of me, and I apologize...but I must ask.. What would it take for Charles to prove he's a top 5 RB to you? Even with a totally incompetent QB in Matt Cassel, the defense only having to worry about Charles, he still put up monster numbers...but you say he's not a top 5 RB because he couldn't carry his team to a better record than 2-14. I understand AP had a QB who wasn't a whole lot better, but a RB can rarely solely carry a team like a QB can. AP was the exception. It was made clear yesterday what it took to be a top 5 RB in the league - being able to do it all as well as being someone that can get his team back in the game. AP does it. McCoy does it. Rice does it (queue the 'Rice sucks'). Lynch does it. Jackson, MJD, Morris, Forte - they do it. Charles is limited in what he can provide to his team. He is a premier pass-catching RB. He has world-class speed. He is not a reliable blocker at all. He cannot run up the middle effectively. Contain the edge with your DEs and crash with your DTs, and Charles can be stopped. Alex Smith has helped more than anyone could imagine, especially considering when Smith is a good runner in his own regard. I never had Charles as a top 5 RB. Yes, I know he has consistently been great in rushing yards, but it is not all about stats. He doesn't seem to help his team win like the others do (yesterday was certainly interesting for Charles, however). It's weird, because I usually really value your football opinion. But I don't see why you're saying some of this. 1) Jamaal Charles is a very solid blocker. 2) he's leading his team in rushing and recieving. He literally can do nothing more to carry this offense. 3) how does he not get his team back in the game? The first 9 games when the Chiefs went 9-0, everyone of them had a second half scoring drive of 80+ yards that ate up clock. They fed Charles and he scored. I'm not going to debate Alex Smith's impact on this team. It's been huge. But you can't fault Charles for a 2 win season when the Chiefs had the most turnovers in the NFL last year. They defense didn't get stops and opposing offenses always had short fields.

Didn't know Charles was good at blocking. But I'd have to say Shady, who I KNOW is a good and willing blocker, as well as receiver. There's really nothing he doesn't do well of the 3. As a pure runner, I'd probably say AP. He IS a punishing runner, but I don't think he's considered a good or very willing blocker when he doesn't have the ball, someone correct me if I'm wrong. But as overall, I'd probably say a tie between Charles and McCoy. If you wanna throw durability in the mix, edge McCoy. Charles might be a bit faster.
