2012 was a terrible year for the Lions. After making the playoffs for the first time since 1999 in 2011, the Lions fell apart and went 4-12.
The "dominating" defensive line was anything but, accounting for only 31 sacks on the season and 15.5 from the edge rushers. They let Cliff Avril walk in free agency to Seattle and cut Kyle Vandenbosch to free up cap space. With three defensive ends on the roster; 2010 7th round pick Willie Young, 2012 4th round draft pick OLB turned DE Ronell Lewis, and recently sign Jason Jones, DE was a huge need. To fill this need the Lions drafted Ezekiel Ansah out of BYU. Ansah has only played football for three years, making him inexperienced but at the same time he hasn't had any of the major common injuries suffered by players with longer playing history. He is a risk pick but he also has arguably the highest ceiling in the draft. "He never came to football until 2010 as a walk-on. He was not even on NFL teams' radars. He wasn't even on their scouting lists. He's a boom-or-bust candidate. I love the kid. Three years from now, he's an All-Pro or he's on the streets, and I don't mean that negatively." -- Mike Mayock
The Lions secondary has long been a need for the team. Adding Glover Quinn and resigning Chris Houston and Louis Delmas helped but more was needed. Defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham and head coach Jim Schwartz have stated they like big, athletic corners for their scheme. Enter Darius Slay. 6' CB sporting a 4.36 40, 35.5" vertical, 124" board jump, and 14 reps on the bench. He should compete for a starting job opposite of Houston. "They had an offensive tackle and corner need. Kind of an interesting pick. There are rumors, and I've confirmed it, that he's had a meniscus problem in his knees, causing a lot of teams to worry whether he'd be ready for training camp." -- Mike Mayock
Since 2010, the Lions have had the same offensive line start the season. Stephan Peterman was cut for cap space, Jeff Backus retired, Gosder Cherilus went to Indianapolis, and Dominic Raiola has been declining every year. Rob Sims is the only lineman guaranteed to start this year. With the retooling of the offensive line going on, a huge hole appeared at RG. So the Lions filled the huge hole with a huge body. Larry Warford, OG, Kentucky. Standing at 6'3" and a whooping 332lb, Warford is, simply put, a beast. Good run blocker and good pass blocker, should be a great asset in protecting Stafford. Best pick of the draft for the Lions. "This is one of my favorite football players in the draft. Every tape I put on, he was dominant. He's square and stout. I've been waiting for this kid to go, and in Detroit, you can't be so one dimensional, and this kid is going to help." -- Mike Mayock
Adding to the defensive line depth is Devin Taylor out of South Carolina. Freakishly long at 6'7" and 266lb Thomas will compete for the starting job opposite of Ziggy, potentially giving the Lions 2 rookie starting DEs. "He's a long, athletic player to go along with Ziggy Ansah." -- Daniel Jeremiah
Im of the opinion of not drafting punters but the Lions feel otherwise when they took Sam Martin. The real intentions for their pick was to get Denard Robinson. They had called Denard on saturday and told him they were going to select him. The Jaguars got him two picks earlier, so the Lions traded down. I dont know much about this guy but he played soccer in HS, and only has played punter for the last two years of college.
Im not going to pretend to know anything about the last four guys the Lions picked other than they are depth, special teamers, or practice squad players. WR Corey Fuller, Virginia Tech; RB Theo Riddick, Notre Dame; TE Micheal Williams, Alabama; and LB Brandon Hepburn, Florida A&M, who is also a biochemist. From NFL.com: He walked on to the Florida A&M football team while carrying a full academic load in biochemistry. During a summer internship, he successfully found a way to kill certain cancer cells in rats using copper-loaded nano particles. Hepburn dreams of owning a biochemical company so he can lead research that will eradicate deadly diseases. My only question is why is he playing football?!?
I cant really complain about this draft besides the fact they drafted a punter in the 5th. They filled the need at DE with Ansah and Taylor, got deeper at CB with Slay, plugged the hole at RG with Warford, and got more depth at TE, WR, RB, and LB. I'd give it a B+.
